Wes McGhee

Heartache Avenue (RGFCD017)

Album CoverFollowing the acclaim received for Wes McGhee’s ‘Border Guitars’ album, Road Goes On Forever Records announces the release of ‘Heartache Avenue - Classic Recordings 1978 - 1992’. This 18 track collection which lasts over 75 minutes includes five previously unreleased tracks, which were mostly recorded in Texas during the same sessions which resulted in the ‘Border Guitars’ album, but were omitted from that album when McGhee decided that it should be largely composed of acoustic material.

In addition, ‘Heartache Avenue’ includes three re-recordings of songs which originally appeared on McGhee’s earlier LPs, ‘Airmail’ (1978) or ‘Landing Lights’ (1982). Three tracks here originally appeared on ‘Landing Lights’ and six more on ‘Zacatecas’ (1987), along with the classic original version of ‘Whisky Is My Driver’ from ‘Airmail’.

None of these early albums by McGhee have appeared on CD in their original form. Among the musicians appearing with McGhee on ‘Heartache Avenue’ are many of his musician friends from Texas including Ponty Bone and Lloyd Maines from Joe Ely’s original band, Freddie Krc from Jerry Jeff Walker’s Gonzo Compadres, and singer/songwriter Kimmie Rhodes, along with long-standing members of McGhee’s British band such as Bob Loveday (also in Bob Geldof’s Band), John Gordon, Al Stewart and Patty Vetta. Wes McGhee’s songwriting skills are well-known, and he was granted the accolade in the 1980s of a Songwriter’s Recognition Night at the famed Soap Creek Saloon in Austin, Texas, sponsored by the ‘Austin Chronicle’, and in the late 1980s, was the first ever British songwriter signed to Bug Music in the US.

More recently, McGhee has been in demand as lead guitarist for numerous visiting American stars, including Chuck Prophet, Rosie Flores, Butch Hancock, Billy Swan and Heather Myles - McGhee also appears on ‘Sweet Little Dangerous’, the recently released and acclaimed live album by Heather Myles, and on the ‘West Texas Heaven’ album by Kimmie Rhodes, as well as on ‘Los London’ by Sid Griffin, the only songrwiter other than McGhee to contribute a track to ‘Heartache Avenue’. Wes McGhee is currently working on songs for his next album and playing sessions and occasional gigs.
